Vogue to premier Met Ball film: The First Monday in May

London - American Vogue is to release a new documentary about its annual Met Ball gala, dubbed the Super Bowl equivalent for the social fashion calendar.

Following the days leading up to the annual Met Ball, (the gala that marks the opening of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s spring exhibition), director Andrew Rossi traces the steps of Anna Wintour, Vogue Director of Special Projects Sylvana Ward Durrett, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton as they put together the final touches on the evening.

With rumours that Wintour has control over everything from the seating arrangement to performers and even the outfits of attendees, the star-studded trailer confirms cameos from the likes of Karl Lagerfeld (who’s shown discussing the ever-present argument, is fashion art?), Justin Bieber, Rihanna and more, whilst promising to shed light on one of the most exclusive events in the fashion industry calender.

The Met Ball itself hasn’t been without its fair share of controversy. With 2015’s gala theme being “Chinese Whispers: Tales of the East in Art, Film and Style”, many expected the event and subsequent exhibition to be rife with racial insensitivity and cultural appropriation, an idea only aided by the fact that the fashion industry still arguably has a series diversity issue.

The First Monday in May will open the Tribeca Film Festival on 13, April 2016.
